Cantankerous Cat Lady

You know, I like that term, “crazy cat lady.”  It’s so cute, and so apt.

We cat women — and men — tend to get a little carried away in matters concerning our favorite cats.  We can’t help it — we love them.

The Literate Cat

However, at my mature age of 80, I believe I’ve earned the right to change my title.  I will become the

“cantankerous cat lady.”  Get to know me and decide for yourself which title you consider most apt.  You can even comment on your choice at the bottom of the page.

So, welcome from the cantankerous cat lady. The purpose of this website is to share “smart cat” stories and gifts with cat lovers of the world.

MY PERSONAL CAT EXPERIENCE

My own story started out with 10 years in Connecticut, then 20 years in Colorado, and the last 50 years in Alaska. During every step of this long journey I have been accompanied by a cat or two.

I’ve met with many different cats during this journey, and have observed several of them from their time of birth until they left the planet for Cat Heaven. Watching the full life cycle of an animal from birth to death can teach one a great deal about their development and about the changes they go through during their life cycle.

A Black Mystery

I have noticed that when a cat bonds with its human companion, its intelligence can be augmented by this relationship. After all, the animal has to learn a new set of rules when coexisting with a human. This learning process can lead to giant steps in its intelligent perception of the world, and can, indeed, lead to a creature we might term a “literate cat.” I believe I have benefited as well from these interactions, as I have learned a great deal about the animal.

I feel my life has been much more fulfilling due to the adventures I have shared with all my animals.

In reality cats do learn Human. Mostly how to wrap us around their little paws. The first rule with cats is, ‘dogs have masters, cats have slaves’.

Like you I have had cats most of my life. All but one has stuck around for at least 19 years to befuddle me!

I can see this will be a very interesting site so I will return to read on.

    Ciao

Good site. I am a dog person, have 3 fur babies. Your site has piqued my interest in owning a cat. I sell CBD on my trulygoodlife.com site an have repeat customers who purchase CBD for their pets. If you have not tried it you might want to tell your followers about the human and bet benefits of CBD.

    Enjoyed visiting your site.

    • Fran Kelso says:

Thanks for the comment, Ray. I will keep your info about CBD for pets in mind. In fact, I take CBD myself for my arthritis, and a friend asked me if I knew where she could get some for her animals. What would be the best address for her to use to contact you for more information?

Hope you get a cat. It is truly a remarkable animal. I just published a book about my cat, Carlos, who was my only companion for 12 years of his life. He was truly remarkable enough to deserve a book, so I wrote it all down. There is even one whole chapter, called “The Gospel According to Carlos,” that is written from his point of view. Fun! And, by the way, did you read my last post, about my cat raising the dog? I do like dogs too. What joy our fur babies bring to our lives!

      • Hi Fran!
I don’t know why I got so excited bout your post! When you said you were 80, I tho’t ,”A REAL friend!” I was 79 in November, and your letter is invigorating to me.
I am also a Cat person. My recent fur friends are adoptions from the grand-daughter of a cat lover who passed away about a year ago. They are Linus and Lucy, womb mates. They are Silver and Black American Shorthairs , and have birth certificates with actual parents!! They are 15 yrs. old (June 26th 2018).
I just got ‘beeped’ that you accepted my friend request. I’m going there now.

How cool to make a new friend who also loves cats. Also, I love meeting people close to my own age. It seems like there aren’t many of us. We gotta stick together. Hope you enjoy all my cat stories. And how nice, that you have two cats. I just wish our fur babies lived longer. I still miss my Carlos and it’s been well over a year since I lost him.

This is just the site I have been looking for, I have 3 cats that visit me regularly, Regie black, getting on in years quite grumpy, Ace white, very polite, Charlie, Norwegian, young inquisitive. I will read all of your articles

  5. You’ve such a beautiful website as The Literate Cat. Your association with varying cats from Connecticut to Colorado and then to Alaska is an AWESOME Experience to know.

The explanation on the lifespan of cats from birth and your marked observations till they left this Earth throws up a sense of pathos and reflect our own human lives.
This is going to be a HUGE Success not only for cat lovers but to everyone who passes by to your lovely site through coincidence and learn the real stories therein.

That was a good read and thank you so much for sharing your experiences spanning over 50 years on CATS. That’s simply incredible!

I wish you all the best of luck and unstoppable success online.

    • Fran Kelso says:

Thank you so much for your nice reply, Phomrong. I hope you are right about the huge success. Meanwhile, I am happy that you enjoyed the website, and hope many more people do as well.

Hello Fran, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. I am an animal lover myself, I love cats and dogs. I happen to own 2 cats, and two dogs and I love them to death. When I am outside, I like to take pictures of cats that I see walking around on the street. My cats are well taken care of, and I had them for about 7 years now. It is nice to meet, and I can’t wait to hear some cat stories from you!!!

    • Fran Kelso says:

Thanks for the nice comment, Ahmad. Yes, cats are a force for good, in my eyes. I love them also. If you get time, send me a story or two about your cats in the comments. I would really enjoy hearing/reading your experiences. Some of my other posts are stories about cats that have owned me. You might find them amusing.

    Love this Fran.
I have a daughter 13 years old and just adores cats. At present we have 9 lol all been desexed. She knows each one by site because they all look the same to us haha she knows what they like and don’t like.
I was a dog lady but these precious fur balls have grown on me 🙂 and I am happy to tend to their needs 🙂
What a wonderful gift you are to our feline family.

    Di 🙂

    • Fran Kelso says:

Thank you for your nice comments. Yes, I imagine your daughter does know those cats well. They are communicating non-verbally to each other. It’s my belief that one way that cats communicate is telepathically. They have probably taught your daughter their nonverbal language, and they all understand each other just fine.

  9. Andrew A. says:

As a cat lover, I thoroughly enjoyed reading some of your posts.
Now, the first thing which comes to my mind is: “I thought I was very knowledgeable about cats, but that was before I met you, Fran. Wow, you are awesome!”
I want to thank you for your informative, entertaining post, I certainly learned something new.
Unfortunately, due to a severe allergy developed by a family member, I have not had a cat for 10 years. My love for them is intact anyway and I regularly read articles or watch videos about them
That being said, I am going to immediately benchmark your blog and will keep coming for more.

    • Fran Kelso says:

How wonderful, Andrew! You have made my day. I do hope you continue visiting. Please comment on the posts any time you want…I would love the feedback. I’ll happily furnish you with your vicarious cat experience. I invite you to look at “Have You Found Your Purrfect Pet Companion?” if you have not already done so. I lost my best cat ever, just about a year ago, and to help work through my grief, I wrote his story. The book came out in July. You’ll read a review of the book in the post I suggested. I think you’d really like it.
